National Association of Letter Carriers to host 27th annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on May 11

The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will hold its 27th annual national food drive on Saturday, May 11. The Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive, the largest single-day food drive in the country, provides residents with an easy way to donate food to those in need.

Macomb County residents interested in participating can fill a bag with non-perishable, non-expired food items and leave it on their porch or near their mailbox. The United States Postal Service letter carriers and a league of volunteers will handle the rest. Individuals can reach out to their local post offices to inquire about volunteering.

All of the food donations collected will stay in Macomb County and will be distributed to those in need through the Macomb Community Action Food Program's network of over 50 food pantries and hunger related organizations. In 2018, the Macomb Food Program received over 200,000 pounds of food through the "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive.

"The food drive is critical to our mission to feed the hungry in Macomb County," said Shannon Mallory, program manager for the Macomb Food Program. "The Macomb Food Program receives many donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season, but by spring, our pantry shelves start to become depleted. Donations collected on this day provide emergency food supplies for thousands of families and individuals."

Volunteers are needed to help sort the donated food drive items before being distributed throughout the county. Groups and individuals interested in volunteering can call (586) 469-6004, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. to schedule a time.

"The importance of the second Saturday in May is always front and center for the letter carriers and their postal coworkers, family and community volunteers," said Michael Sheridan, chairperson of the Macomb Food Program board. "Help us spread the word. The 27th annual Letter Carriers' Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is helping to feed the hungry in Macomb County. Let's do our part to make it a great success."

Hunger affects people around the country, including thousands of children, senior citizens and veterans in Macomb County. With most school and alternative meal programs suspended during summer months, millions of children and families must find alternative sources of nutrition.
