Hackel appoints new Deputy County Executive

Macomb County Executive Mark A. Hackel is bringing John Paul Rea back as deputy county executive to oversee the departments of Planning and Economic Development (PED), Roads, Health and Community Services, Veterans Services and workforce development initiatives. Rea previously served as deputy county executive until he was appointed director of the Department of Planning and Economic Development.

Rea will take the place of Al Lorenzo, who will be moving to a part-time role involving policy and organizational development.

"JP has proven his ability to affect transformative change," said Hackel. "I know he will be instrumental in helping me implement some strategic plans I have for improving countywide operations."

Rea, 35, has been employed by the county since he interned as a graduate student of Grand Valley State University more than 11 years ago. A lifelong resident of Macomb County, he represents the area on the boards of the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transit (SMART), Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority and Automation Alley. He serves on numerous committees with the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments and Detroit Regional Chamber. In 2017, he was recognized as a Hometown Hero by the Romeo-Washington Chamber of Commerce, "40 under 40" by Crain's Detroit Business and "30 in their Thirties" by DBusiness.

"I am incredibly humbled and grateful for this opportunity to continue to make Macomb County the best place to call home," said Rea. "With the support of County Executive Hackel and the people I work with each day, I look forward to expanded opportunities to connect with residents and businesses and to be an ambassador for all the exciting things happening here."

Rea joins Chief Deputy Executive Mark Deldin and deputies Pam Lavers and Vicki Wolber to form Hackel's executive team. Current Deputy Director of PED Vicky Rad will serve as interim director of the department.
