Employee Focus: Family Planning Program

ByMaria Swiatkowski, Macomb County Health Department

For more than 30 years, the Macomb County Health Department has offered the state- and locally-funded Family Planning Program.  Macomb County is the only health department in the region (besides the city of Detroit) with a Family Planning Program. The program makes available general reproductive health assessments, comprehensive contraception services, cancer screenings, related health education and counseling services plus referrals as needed to both men and women. Services are available regardless of financial status or residency, and program fees are determined by income and insurance coverage at little to no cost.

The program staff of 15 employees includes a doctor, nurse practitioner, physician’s assistant, registered nurses, a social worker, health technicians and clerical staff that serves nearly 3,000 clients per year in three different county health centers.

“The Family Planning Program is a valuable public health prevention program for our citizens and plays a critical role in reducing health risks and promoting healthy behaviors,” said Macomb County Health Department Director and Health Officer William Ridella.

In addition to the regular staff, the program is fortunate to have Dr. William Stanley as part of their team. Dr. Stanley is a board certified obstetrician-gynecologist who donates his time, energy and clinical expertise every Tuesday to the Family Planning Program.

“Our staff members are patient-centered and treat each and every client with dignity and respect,” said Patricia Detrick, program manager for Family Planning. “They are the most caring, loyal and awesome employees that I have had the pleasure of working with in my time at Macomb County.”

When visiting the Family Planning Program, clients will be welcomed by smiling faces and engaged staff members who will help every step of the way. From signing in, to consulting about different options of birth control methods, and finally meeting with a doctor, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant, the Family Planning staff members make every effort to address concerns that clients have.
