Hearing and vision screenings available for incoming kindergartenersThe Macomb County Health Department’s Hearing and Vision Program is conducting hearing and vision screenings for incoming kindergarteners at various locations in the county from March through May. Take advantage of this service now so your child will be prepared for entrance into kindergarten prior to the first day of school, as mandated by the Michigan Public Health Code (Act 368 of 1978). If your child needs to be screened for kindergarten enrollment, call (586) 412-5945 for an appointment and screening locations. Screenings are done by appointment only and at no charge. Early registration until April 6 By Amanda Minuado, Macomb County Planning& Economic Development The 4th Annual Sprint and Splash will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at Lake St. Clair Metropark in Harrison Township. Sprint and Splash is fast becoming a premier festival on Lake St. Clair. Sprint and Splash is a fundraising event with the unique purpose of promoting and celebrating Lake St. Clair, which is truly the heart of the Great Lakes. I love this month because it coincides with one of my favorite annual activities – celebrating March is Reading Month. This month I have already visited a few schools to read to children of various age groups. They always enjoy this activity and I enjoy the fact that I get to take a break from my usual work to engage with the youth of Macomb County.
Even more exciting is that our Information Technology Department has this week launched our newly updated macombgov.org homepage as well as other imperative pages, such as the About, Directory and News and Media pages. All of the departmental websites have now been converted to the new site design. The changeover of these essential pages was the last step to completing this time-consuming, but necessary process. A related goal is that next week we also launch a newly-designed Intranet site. Macomb Today will be made more user-friendly for our employees to have access to all the essential forms and other governmental information they need to work for the county. Both of these launches represent a vast design and usability improvement over the old site, and we hope you like it! Read more about this important project here. I’m excited for what the season brings: the reopening of farmers markets, gardening and start of fun outdoor activities. Payroll distribution dates to changeBy Eric Herppich, Macomb County Human Resources Director As you know, county payroll is currently processed so that full-time employees are paid to date. In other words, payroll is disbursed on Fridays for a two-week pay period that ends on that same Friday. The deadline for payroll entry is the Tuesday of the pay week. This results in frequent inaccurate payroll records as changes for the pay, such as time off, overtime, etc., cannot be entered after the Tuesday deadline. To correct this problem, the county will change the 2015 payroll distribution dates for all employees by one day each pay period for five consecutive pay periods, beginning with the second pay in April. Please view this updated pay calendar/schedule which reflects the changes as they will occur. The payroll and attendance staff in each department will be receiving instruction from county finance/payroll staff on the proper entry of time. If you have any questions, please contact your department's payroll and attendance staff person.

Employee FocusNick Champine - Juvenile Justice Center
There is no such thing as an ordinary day at Macomb County’s Juvenile Justice Center (JJC) and Monday, March 16 proved to be no different, especially for JJC Youth Specialist Nick Champine. That afternoon, Champine was performing one of his most routine tasks for his position, bringing in new residents who had recently been sentenced by the court to serve some time at the JJC. He had several of them sit on a bench, as is normal procedure, while they wait for their turn to check in. Suddenly, out of the corner of his eye, Champine saw one of the female admits fall off of the bench and he heard her hit the ground hard. Champine rushed over to the teenager who quickly went from gasping for breath and hyperventilating, to appearing to not breathe at all. “She was not responding to me. I checked to see if she was breathing and, if she was, it was so faint I couldn’t tell,” said Champine.
Macomb's Memories - Macomb County's Road Bee DaysBy Cynthia S. Donahue, Macomb County Facilities and Operations As the County of Macomb developed, highways were constructed along old Indian trails, the lakeshore and the river banks. The primary goal was to establish farm-to-market routes. These first roads were often corduroy roads made from logs placed perpendicular to each other. Macomb County departments are award winners
There are a lot of really positive things going on in Macomb County government. In fact, did you know that many of our departments routinely receive awards for the great work they are doing? Below is a list of departments that have recently been honored. ·The Macomb County Department of Roads received an Award of Excellence from the Michigan Concrete Association for its construction project on Metropolitan Parkway from Gratiot to Clinton River Spillway. The project covered 1.4 miles of concrete pavement repair, joint patching, drainage structure adjustment, curb and gutter replacement and pavement markings. It was completed on June 15 last year. Construction season barrels into Macomb CountyBy Bob Hoepfner, Macomb County Department of Roads Director This coming construction season, we expect the Orange Barrel Polka to be in full swing. The Department of Roads continues to take advantage of every federal dollar available to us to improve the roads in Macomb County. With a price tag of approximately $6 million, the most costly project this year will be the reconstruction and widening of Metropolitan Parkway from Groesbeck to Gratiot. This extends our prior widening projects on Metro Parkway to better accommodate the high traffic volumes on this busy thoroughfare. Pets of the Month Dakota is an 8-year-old beagle/pug mix that is full of life and waiting for her forever home. Jack and Lucky are approximately 3-year-old brothers that came from the same place and have been patiently waiting for the purfect forever home to share.
